In Switzerland the Canton will often put a contentious matter to referendum. Not a Brexit style free-for-all of make anything up but with independently provided information and knowledge.

‘Do you want a park and ride scheme into Geneva? Here are its fairly estimated advantages and here is what it will cost. Discuss calmly and make a choice’

This leads to better decision making where everyone is able to buy-in to whatever is decided.

While we recognise and support the ideal of direct democracy through more local referenda, should the right to call one be left to the Executive or can it be called by the public, if so, what are the processes to be for doing so?  Should the results be based on a straight majority? Will the results be binding? who will be responsible for delivering on the referendum result?
